Susan Shumba is a community-based researcher, HIV advocate, and Master's student in Environmental Studies at York University in Toronto, Canada. Her research examines racial inequities in emergency healthcare, with a particular focus on the experiences of Black women, migrants, and people living with HIV. She is committed to advancing health equity through community-based participatory research, Black feminist approaches, and anti-racist policy and practice.

Susan is the Founder and Executive Director of the Southern African Settlement Support Centre (SASSC), a community organization that supports newcomers through settlement services, health promotion, leadership development, and social inclusion. She also works with the Prisoners with HIV/AIDS Support Action Network (PASAN), where she has coordinated community-led initiatives that strengthen the leadership, economic empowerment, and well-being of women living with HIV.

With more than a decade of experience in HIV advocacy, community mobilization, and public health programming, Susan has collaborated with researchers, healthcare providers, governments, and community organizations to improve access to care and reduce health inequities affecting marginalized populations. Her work spans HIV prevention and treatment, migration, gender equity, stigma reduction, community engagement, and knowledge mobilization.

Susan serves as a Governing Council member of the International AIDS Society (IAS), where she contributes to global discussions on HIV policy, meaningful community engagement, and health equity. She is passionate about ensuring that lived experience informs research, policy, and practice, and she continues to advocate for inclusive, community-led responses that improve the lives of people living with HIV and other equity-deserving communities.

Kenneth Ngure, MPH, MSc, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Global Health and the Chair Department of Community Health at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. He is an Affiliate Associate Professor in the Department of Global Health, University of Washington, Visiting Scientist at the Kenyatta National Hospital and Visiting Professor at the Heidelberg Institute of Global Health. He is also a member of the Expert Committee on Clinical Trials of the Kenyan Pharmacy and Poisons Board. He is a behavioural scientist and a member of the Behavioral Research Group of the Microbicides Trials Network and the International Maternal Pediatric Adolescent AIDS Clinical Trials Network. Kenneth has over 20 years’ public health leadership experience in diverse HIV and AIDS research settings in Africa and has consulted for such bodies as the World Health Organization.
