Why opportunistic infections still matter in the HIV response - Part 2

Mehdi Karkouri, a Professor of Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, University Hassan II of Casablanca, Morocco, is also a Governing Council member of the International AIDS Society, where he serves as a representative for MENA. He is also the President of the community-based, grassroots Association de Lutte Contre le Sida (ALCS), responding to HIV and viral hepatitis in Morocco with a presence in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Mehdi is the principal investigator and co-researcher for several studies conducted in Morocco and the MENA region. His research interests focus on access to services, especially for key populations, HIV testing and self-testing, and stigma and discrimination.

Omar Sued is a medical doctor who has been working in HIV since 1997 in different countries and settings, including public and private hospitals, health centres, prisons and NGOs. Omar is an enthusiastic supporter of the IAS values advocating for prioritizing evidence-based interventions with a focus on human rights for people living with HIV. Omar is a part of the International AIDS Society as a Governing council member and works as an HIV Advisor for Latin America and the Caribbean at the Pan-American Health Organization Headquarters in Washington DC, US.

Prof Ahmed Cordie is a consultant physician and assistant professor at the Department of Endemic Medicine, Cairo University Hospitals, the Founder of Kasr Al-Aini HIV and Viral Hepatitis Fighting Group and coordinator of the Supreme Council of University Hospitals (SCU) Committee for Medical Virology and Blood-borne Pathogens.

His areas of expertise include HIV and HIV /viral hepatitis co-infection. He led the work in the first speciality clinics in his institution and the Egyptian university hospitals designed to serve people living with HIV and treat co-infections (Viral hepatitis/HIV, TB-HIV) and co-morbidities such as Dyslipidemia, SLD /MASH, and Cardiovascular and Bone disorders.

Dr Lottie Brown is a junior doctor and NIHR-funded academic clinical fellow in infectious diseases and medical microbiology at St George's University and Hospital in London, UK, with a focus on invasive fungal diseases. She is currently undertaking a research fellowship in talaromycosis at Duke University in North Carolina, USA, supervised by Associate Professor Thuy Le. She has previously undertaken research fellowships in Vietnam, Malawi and Nepal. Her early career achievements include 16 peer-reviewed publications, including first-author papers in Lancet Infectious Diseases and Clinical Infectious Diseases. She is regularly invited to speak at major international and national conferences. She co-leads 3 international working groups and has contributed to national guidelines for fungal diagnostics in the UK.
